Sara Klar was born in Far Rockaway, New York into an orthodox Jewish family of Eastern European heritage. As a child, she loved reading and studied English literature at Brooklyn College, Barnard and Columbia University. Shortly thereafter, Klar broke with her culture, moved into lower Manhattan and began developing her art.
Klar immersed herself in New York museums and studied art in private classes. During this period, her abstract paintings explored color relationships and referenced hidden imagery relating to personal narratives. In 2000, she expanded her work to explore the physicality of paint as matter, a subject she continues with today.
